Skye Gellmann is an Australian Artist & Circusmaker.

Skye’s work demonstrates circus' ability to communicate in ways beyond spectacle. While minimalistic, their work is eclectic and cross-disciplinary. Skye’s approach departs from various points including installation, stage, performance art, immersive theatre and visual art, creating encounters that unlock new sensitivities, alter perspectives, and re flect on the state of the world we live in.

Skye grew up learning circus in Adelaide, South Australia at Cirkidz - where they performed for most of their childhood, before they went on to study at the National Institute of Circus Arts (NICA), graduating in 2006.

In 2008 Skye initiated the circus work Scattered Tacks while living in a squat in South Yarra, Melbourne, with his collaborators (Alex Gellmann and Terri Cat Silvertree). Scattered Tacks was an anti-theatrical circus performance, presented notably at Noorderzon Performing Arts Festival, Brisbane Powerhouse, the Judith Write Center and Artshouse Melbourne, picking up Most Outstanding Production at the 2008 Melbourne Fringe.

After they were evicted from their squat in 2009, Skye lived in many unconventional spaces including a storage cupboard, in a rooftop shanty, and on a studio floor, where they made Retinal Damage, which won Best Circus at Sydney Fringe the following year.

In 2010 Skye initiated the site-specific circus project, Mothlight with Naomi Francis, a duo-acrobatic exploration of a landscape made entirely from cling wrap. Mothlight picked up Best Circus at Adelaide Fringe in 2011. It toured to 7 locations over its lifetime.

For the 2012 Next Wave Festival, Skye and his collaborators (Kieran Law, Thom Browning, Dylan Sale and Gareth Hart), created Blindscape, a fully immersive circus experience that used smartphone technology to create three-dimensional soundscapes. Blindscape toured to La Boite Theatre, PACT, Junction Arts Festival and Melbourne Fringe.

Most recently, Skye’s project Bodies Over Bitumen, a physical investigation of street landscapes, picked up Best Experimental Performance at the 2015 Melbourne Fringe, and the Greenroom Award for Innovation in Contemporary Circus.

Skye is currently creating new full length and short works from his studio is Marrickville NSW.
